The treatment involves administering a specific dose of iron through an IV. This allows for immediate absorption into the bloodstream, quickly restoring iron levels and alleviating symptoms associated with iron deficiency. Depending on the dose and form of iron, individuals being to feel amelioration of symptoms within 1-4 weeks.

The duration will depend on the dose and form of IV iron used. A typical IV Iron infusion lasts between 60-75 minutes, depending on patient tolerance.

There are two types of IV iron - Venofer and Monoferric.
Venofer can be infused in doses 100-300mg, and multiple infusion sessions are done. Monoferric is dosed as 500mg to 1000mg in a single session.
The cost for each iron drug varies, and the administration cost varies as well.
Each single infusion of Venofer is $205. Typically 3-5 infusion sessions of Venofer are needed.
Each single infusion of Monoferric is $280. Monoferric typically requires just one infusion due to the high dosage.
Administration costs can be billed to your extended health benefits, and the drug coverage for iron will depend on your insurance plan.

Common side effects with Iron Infusions include: discomfort or bruising at the site of injection, inflammation of the vein, headache, nausea, diarrhea, joint pains, muscle aches and rashes. These symptoms can last up to 5 days post-infusion.

No need for a referral for IV iron. We do, however, require a CBC and ferritin panel that is recent within 3 months in order to quality you for an iron infusion.

Please book a pre-iron complimentary phone call to determine suitability
Please have bloodwork that is recent within the past 3 months displaying your CBC and ferritin levels (and TIBC/transferrin, if available).
After your pre-iron consult, Dr. Grace will send the iron prescription to the pharmacy of your choice and you will be booked for an iron infusion session(s).
Pick up the iron before your infusion and bring to your appointment. Ensure you are hydrated and have eaten something prior to the infusion session.

The cost of the iron drug (Venofer or Monoferric) may or may not be covered by your drug plan. Please check with your provider.
The cost of administration ($205 for Venofer and $280 for Monoferric) can be billed to extended health benefits under Naturopathic Care.
